Dr. Terry D. Britton

ROSE STATE COLLEGE PRESIDENT

Dr. Terry D. Britton, the sixth president in the history of Rose State College, is a native Oklahoman.  He was raised in the Redstone Valley near Washita and Anadarko and attended public schools, grades two through twelve, in Anadarko.  With the encouragement of his mother who told him education is the way to true success,  he pursued his higher education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. He earned the Bachelor in Arts in English Literature in 1965 and continued his educational pursuits at the University of Oklahoma where he earned the M.A. and the Ph.D. in English Literature.

He began his teaching career at the University of Oklahoma in 1965 as a teaching assistant in the subjects of English and Literature and later as a special instructor. He came to Rose State College in January 1972 as English Instructor and was promoted to his first administrative assignment as Director of the Learning Resources Center in 1973.  In 1991 he was named Vice President for Information Services where he served until his promotion to Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1996.  He became Executive Vice President on August 1, 2000.  Upon President Cook's retirement in June 2006, Dr. Britton was named the sixth President of Rose State College July 1, 2006.

Other significant higher education roles Dr. Britton has remained active in throughout the years include: Consultant-Evaluator for the North Central Association since 1992 and Executive Director of the Higher Education Telecommunications Association since 1983.  He has been a leader both in Oklahoma and the nation in the use of telecommunications for distance learners in higher education.  In 2002 he taught a course for the University of Oklahoma's Advanced Programs on Telecommunications Policies in Aviano, Italy, and the Sigonella Naval base in Sicily.  In 2007 he was appointed to the American Association of Community Colleges Commission on Communications and Marketing.

He and his wife, Kay, who served 27 years as a librarian and professor at Rose State College prior to her retirement, reside in Norman and have one son, Aaron Britton, who is currently attending the University of Oklahoma.  Sons Marshall and Morgan live in Norman and Noble respectively, and daughter Mynda lives in Indiana.  They have one grandson and three granddaughters.

Writing poetry, fishing in small streams and ponds, and gardening are among some of his leisure time favorites.  This past July, he and Kay brought their English Literature studies alive by visiting London and the surrounding countryside.
