Session Descriptions
“K-20” Session: The K20 Center for Educational and
Community Renewal invests in research focused on teaching and learning
innovations. Knowledge gained from these
research activities is in turn transferred to Oklahoma schools and universities
through the K20 Center’s professional development for K-12 teachers,
principals, superintendents, researchers, professors, and other key
stakeholders with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM). In the realm of
digital game-based learning, the K20 Center has emerged as an innovator by the
development of a massive multiplayer online game (MMOG) through a 3-year USDE
Star Schools project.
“Career in a Box”
Session: Provides
curriculum to teachers to assist a guide students to careers in Aerospace.
“AIR” Session: A workforce development tool that
recruits, trains, and retains a skilled aerospace workforce. For those
interested in a career in aerospace AIR provides a guided transition into the
industry by creating seamless connections between education and employment. For
aerospace employers AIR provides a process for recruiting and retaining new
professionals with specific aerospace skills.
“Forces of Flight”
Session: A Boeing
program created to help classroom teachers to excite and engage students about
science. The project was designed to meet and promote the National Science
Education Standards for grades 5 through 8, but also to be flexible enough to
meet a variety of other needs and interests.
“Build a
Plane” Session: The Thomas W. Wathen Foundation is a
National Center for Aviation Education and will present a variety of curricula
opportunities to use aviation to teach STEM subjects for all grade
levels. The Wathen Foundation is also the home
of Build A Plane, which gives high school students the
chance to build real airplanes.
“Star Base” Session: Details coming Soon
“OKC Aviation Alliance” Session: A unique educational opportunity for high school students, current college students and college graduates interested in aerospace exists in the OKC area through the OKC Aviation Education Alliance. The Alliance developed degree tracks for Pilot Training, Maintenance Technology, Aviation Technical Services, and Aviation Management. Associate Degree, Bachelor Degree, and Master Degree programs were agreed upon in a Memorandum of Understanding among the institutions. State Regents endorsed the program. Subsequent action by the State Legislature provided authority for credit transfer among institutions. For example, student could obtain certificate from Metro Tech in aviation maintenance technology and be awarded 30 hours, transfer to Oklahoma City Community College complete 30 more hours for an Associate Degree then transfer to a four-year institution to complete their Bachelor Degree after 60 more hours. Obviously, the student must stay in the same career path. This program is formalized in institutional catalogs.
